Listen to the Smell

Devotional Guide August 12-29th
Morning PRAYER Morning haze and rainy drips slow my awareness of the day ahead. I seek my Lord to remain in sleep and warmth beneath the blankets. Inspire my awakening into your Spirit and Word to learn and be challenged to your direction and sculpting. I seek in my love for you to please you in this day as I live in your grace. Amen

“Listen do you smell something?” Ephesians 4:25-5:2
I love this quote from the movie Ghostbusters. But I ask you, do you smell something? In Ephesians, we are in our worship, commitment, kindness, and love an aroma to God. The burning of sacrificial meat upon the altar is a pleasing aroma to God. This leads me to believe our living sacrifices while not literally flayed upon a hibachi have an odor or are perceived by God as aromas and stenches. Imagine the slanderous and bitter words expelled from our mouths with the reek of waste.…

Pinky Swear     John 6:24-35 This week I have been busy with our church’s Stay and Play lunch. We provide lunch for the children as the school prepares for the start of classes and deep clean the cafeteria. We have been singing the song “Hymn of Promise” by Natalie Sleeth. It is a song of transformation and resurrection found through grace and Jesus Christ. With my mind on things childlike, I thought of our ideas of promises. Christ says we don’t believe because of the signs, but because he feeds us. Are our understandings of God still like this?…

Then There Was the Wind     John 6:16-21 . I remember camping at Potato Creek State Campground when the kids were little. We rented canoes and were having fun. Then the wind changed, and I found myself with two children struggling to steer and paddle the canoe. I panicked. Ron was yelling directions that were just confusing and making me panic more. Eventually Ron made it to us an…

Ghoulies and GhostiesMark 6: 14-29 From ghoulies and ghosties
And long-leggedy beasties
And things that go bump in the night,
Good Lord, deliver us!

This Old Scottish prayer reminds us of the fears and superstitions that can inhabit our imaginations. Evidenced in our scripture is the torture of the mind that the marriage of guilt and superstition can create. Herod operating in fear of position and respect beheaded John the Baptist. It seems that grace that was blooming within Him to know The God of Love was rejected by fear and superstition. Believing Jesus to be empowered by the Ghost of John he was tormented by his actions.  If on…

My Favorite Teacher, Mrs. GradyMark 6: 30-34, 53-56
My third -grade teacher Mrs. Grady resides in my memory as Miss Honey in Roald Dahl’s Matilda. She would read to us as the dust motes danced in the warm sunshine flooding in the doorway and windows. She was a gentle, encouraging teacher, young and pretty. I felt safe in her classroom. She cared for us her flock of eager sheep. Jesus proclaims the people were like sheep without a shepherd. We are often told how mindless sheep can be. Being compared …

God's PowerMark 6: 1-13  Tell me I am not alone. You have been there, right? You are being tested. Spelling, math, science, driving test ….. you feel a little queezy, and your heart beats faster, and doubt sweeps over every inch of your body. Judgment. All I am and what others think of me and my abilities are wrapped up in this moment.  That is if we rely solely upon ourselves. The last three weeks have been exploring our trust in God. Our faith is a gift that aligns us to believe in all God can do. Mark intr…
